ROSACEA

Rosacea is a common, long-term skin condition that causes redness, papules, and swelling on the face. Often referred to as adult acne, it frequently begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily. The condition rarely reverses itself, and can become worse without treatment.

About 50% of people with rosacea also have eye involvement (ocular rosacea). Rosacea can, however, be treated and controlled if medical advice is sought in the early stages.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Burning and stinging sensations
  • Permanent redness
  • Inflammatory lesions (papules and pustules)
  • Small blood vessels in the skin becoming visible)
  • Tissue hyperplasia (excessive cell growth) leading to nodules

COMMON TRIGGERS OF ROSACEA INCLUDE:

  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Cold weather (wind)
  • Heat
  • Menopause
  • Certain medications, such as vasodilator drugs
  • Hot drinks
  • Alcohol and caffeine
  • Eating certain foods, spicy food in particular
